Mental Awareness Health Week 2022: Combating Loneliness & Stress When Working Remotely

Author: Myk Baxter

Although we’re now living in a post-Covid world, we at Myk Baxter Marketing (like many other businesses) are continuing to work remotely & away from the rest of the team, which can often leave us feeling isolated & lonely.

And, yes whilst we may have the occasional face-to-face meeting, Google Meets & WhatsApp have become our main portals of connecting with the outside world & we often miss the buzz of working in an office.

With Mental Health Awareness Week commencing this coming Monday, in today’s blog post, we wanted to share our guidance on how to defeat feeling secluded from your colleagues & how to defend yourself from unwanted stress in a time when it simply isn’t welcome.

First of all, communication in any shape or form is key here, but there is nothing more connecting than a telephone call. A person’s voice can be one of the most comforting things in the world & you can hear & express emotion that simply cannot be conveyed in an email or text message.

We make it a priority to have weekly telephone conversations with each other, both about work & our personal lives. After all a simple ‘how’s your day going?’ can make all the difference to someone’s mood & we at MBM see our colleagues as friends, and what great ones they are.

Next up, we cannot stress (no pun intended) how important it is to take a break from your technology when working remotely – including your phone!

Allocate yourself an hour out of your day to take some time for yourself & reset your mind. Going for a run, cosying up with your current read or making a great lunch are some of our favourite mindfulness activities.

By actioning these practices, you’ll find that you reclaim some control of your day & what you love to do at a time when it’s easy to fall into the trap of sitting at your desk from dawn till dusk.

Speaking of controlling your day it’s important that you also switch off at the time you normally would if you were working from the office. When this time rolls around, switch off your email notifications & clear away your other work-related items. That’ll help you prevent taking the day’s stresses into your evening & allow you to spend great quality time in the company of your loved ones.

Protecting your mindset is the key too, but so is protecting that of others. If you’re having a hard time remembering that other members of your team & your customers may be too, try & keep control of your emotions in stressful situations. As Harry Styles says ‘Treat People With Kindness”.

Overall, this is all about sharing the love & being there for each other & ourselves in what is still a strange time.
