An Insight into: eCommerce Re-Design & When Is It Needed?

Author: Myk Baxter

When it comes to eCommerce, even the very best sites seek a refresh occasionally. But as a digital marketing consultant, I’ll admit: Deciding to begin an eCommerce website redesign is a big step to take.

However, your website is a digital hub, and you want to make sure you are showcasing your business in the best possible light. And, if your website isn’t reaching the same level of conversions as it once did, or your bounce rate has rocketed, it’s time for a rework.

Today, I’ll talk you through the process of your eCommerce website design. I’ll help you identify how regularly you should be refreshing your site and how you can begin the process.

But, first, let’s discuss the benefits of an eCommerce website redesign and the outcomes you can expect when leaping.

Your number of returning customers will increase

If a user visits your website and receives a pleasant experience, they will likely return. 88% of online shoppers are less likely to return to a site that grants them a poor user experience. In today’s digital world, your mobile site must be just as good (or greater than) its desktop version, as this is the way most online shopping is conducted.

A higher conversion rate

There are various ways of increasing your conversion rate. But, the most popular way of doing this is by giving your website a total overhaul. You want it to look appealing to consumers, and the more compelling it is, the higher the number of shoppers completing their purchases will be.

It will boost your ranking in the SERPs

SEO isn’t just about well-written content. Should you redesign your eCommerce platform thoughtfully and with your SEO score in mind, you are destined to climb the rankings. You want to incorporate SEO’s best on-page practices at every stage of the website rebuild.

How often should you look to redesign your eCommerce website?

As a generic rule, it’s better to update your platform more frequently than it is less. Ideally, you want to complete your refresh every three years.

However, you may wish to give your site a facelift before this time and that brings me to my next point: the six main reasons why you should redesign your eCommerce website.

6 Reasons You Should Look To Redesign Your Ecommerce Website

Whether it be un-aesthetically pleasing, outdated, or glitchy, the core issue will remain the same: It’s simply ineffective or not as effective as it once was. Here are some of the signs that a refresh is needed.

Your website isn’t mobile-friendly

As I touched on briefly above, there is great importance in having a mobile-friendly website. In Q2 of 2022, mobile devices generated nearly 59% of global website traffic, & that’s without including tablets. Additionally, over half of online consumers use their smartphones to shop. Therefore, if your site doesn’t look great on a mobile, it’s screaming out to be redesigned.

It has a high bounce rate

You want to be looking closely at your data when deciding if your eCommerce site is due an update. Your website’s bounce rate says a lot about your website’s effectiveness. If it sits between 26 to 40% or lower, your site is considered excellent. 41% to 55% is just average, whilst anything between 56% to 70% is inadequate.

Regardless of if your website has a low bounce rate, you want to maintain it and should still look at refreshing your website to keep up your success.

However, what I’m saying is that if it sits at the higher end of the scale, it’s time you prioritise a refresh.

If you’ve updated your branding, but not your eCommerce platform.

Inconsistent branding is a huge red flag to those shopping online, especially if they are to come through social media to your site.

For example, if you’ve updated your original logo or font, but this isn’t reflected in your website, potential customers will run for the hills. As, not only does it give the impression that your website isn’t well maintained, but it will confuse.

Your website isn’t user friendly & lacks in modern technology.

When it comes to eCommerce, providing a great user experience should be prioritised over everything else. Naturally, if your website takes more than three seconds to load, 40% of your visitors will abandon it. The same goes for if your images won’t load when engaging with content. You want to make sure you are updating your site’s technology to fund your overall user experience.

You’ve seen business growth, but it’s not reflected on your website.

When launching your website for the first time, you may for ease have selected an easy-to-customize, cost-effective template. But after seeing your company grow, it won’t feel like the right fit anymore.

But this is great! By actioning an eCommerce website redesign, you can differentiate your site against your fellow competitors and make it more distinctive to your success and branding. Investing money into a customised site will help you showcase your offering in a better light.

Your sales are declining

Finally, should your sales be strongly declining, it’s time for a website to revitalize. This is normally impacted by a confusing user experience, so you want to make sure you prioritise this.
